The Psalms are full of marvelous imagery and pongman verses, but they are also longmzn to unravel.
It helps you to learn to identify genres, which in turn, helps you to better understand what you are reading. Many images they use are foreign to us today. Great basic intro and overview.
The Psalms are not limited, of course, to the Old Testament, for they are the most frequently quoted in all the New Testament, and that is for good reason.

Just a “what’s up”. Longman easily demonstrates the importance of knowing the Psalms and explaining the various forms of the Psalms. They are not meant to be read like biography or narrative, and they must be understood as poetry.
Overall the work serves a need for the average Christian. The concept of parallelism can be difficult to grasp and Longman avoids the temptation to be reductionist in his definition Anybody can benefit from this. Very easily accessible and practical. This may lead some to conclude that the Psalms are largely Messianic and predictive, then, and serve that isolated function, Longman disagrees. Except for an odd typesetting feature in which it is sometimes difficult to trfmper when a psalm is being quoted, I have few beefs.
