While it is a novel and is entertaining, it ignores most of the history of the time. It starts when she is a little girl in Italy, and follows her through the time her husband, King Henry of France, dies.

Just looking at my goodreads stats gives you an idea how much since I’ve read 17 books by her since compared to my second most read author at An ever-growing collection of others appears at: It is deliciously unclear. I also didn’t like when Catherine’s thoughts blended in with the narration, as I had more than enough of her as it was – I didn’t need everything painted with her beliefs – and it felt awkward that the two weren’t properly separated.

This is before all the “good parts” where Catherine indeed becomes “Madame Serpent. Catherine even had a hole dug in the floor of her floor so she could watch Diane and Henry making love below her.

It also dragged a bit.

This novel is as much the story of Jeanne of Navarre as it is Catherine. This was originally published in but has just been released in a quality paperback form.

Basing an entire plot on the underhanded fighting of women was boring, and Catherine’s spite, though well deserved, was tiring – her serpjente could’ve been shown in such a better way. The court didn’t trust her, specially because she was an italian. I absolutely hated the way the POV jumped around multiple times in one scene, too; now I understand why head-hopping is such a jarring and undesirable way to write, as it was confusing and pointless.
